Suppose your term grade is 88%, it counts for 65% of the course, your final exam counts for 35%, and your school reports a final course grade of 84%.
Step 1: Find the points already earned
88 × 0.65 = 57.20
Your term work contributed 57.20 percentage points to the final course grade.
Step 2: Work out both possible reporting ranges
If the school rounded
A reported 84% can represent an underlying final grade from 83.50% up to, but not including, 84.50%.
83.50% ≤ final grade < 84.50%If the school truncated
A reported 84% can represent an underlying final grade from 84.00% up to, but not including, 85.00%.

Because the lower boundary is included, round it up to the next valid hundredth. Because the upper boundary is excluded, stop at the hundredth immediately below it.
Estimated exam range: 75.15%–77.99%
Truncated final grade: calculate the exam range
(84.00 − 57.20) ÷ 0.35 = 76.571428…
(85.00 − 57.20) ÷ 0.35 = 79.428571…
Again, include the lower boundary and exclude the upper boundary, then express the valid endpoints to two decimal places.
Estimated exam range: 76.58%–79.42%
The answer is an estimated range, not a guaranteed exact exam mark. The range exists because a whole-number final course grade can represent many underlying percentages. Why Is My Final Exam Grade a Range?
A displayed final grade may not represent the exact underlying percentage used in the calculation. For example, a transcript showing 79% could represent an underlying grade around that reported value, depending on the school’s rounding convention. If the school truncates instead, the possible underlying range is different. That uncertainty carries through the reverse calculation, so the result is best represented as a range.
What If My School Rounded My Final Grade?
Rounding means a grade is reported as the nearest displayed value according to the school’s rule. An underlying value may therefore be displayed as a whole-number grade after rounding. Knowing that your final course grade is 79% does not necessarily mean the underlying calculation used exactly 79.00%.
What If My School Truncated My Final Grade?
Truncation is different from rounding. A school may remove the digits after the reported precision rather than moving the grade to the nearest value.
